4 Ways to Make Exercise Fun for Seniors

If you are an older adult, one of the best things that you can do for your health and overall well-being is exercising. However, many seniors often find themselves unable to exercise as they get older. When this happens, frustration often ensues, which can lead to inactivity and further health complications. But exercise doesn’t always have to feel difficult or boring.

At Lighthouse Professional Placement & Caregivers, we want seniors to know that there are numerous activities out there which they can perform. Some of these things may seem non-traditional, but they can actually keep seniors engaged while having fun:

  1. Gardening
Gardening isn’t just a hobby that can produce delicious food and flowers. It also provides seniors with a great opportunity to move around and exercise. Gardening promotes range of motion, balance, and strength.
  2. Enlist the Grandchildren

Want to spend the day with your beloved grandchildren? You can do that while still incorporating some exercise! Consider taking your grandchildren at a local park or playground – walk them around, push them on the swings, and play around with them. It’s a great way to get some low-impact exercises while spending precious time with your loved ones.

Grandchildren out for the day? With our companionship care service, we can accompany you to the local park where you can still enjoy a variety of activities.

  3. Take Up Dancing
Did you know? Research shows that dancing can help improve a seniors’ balance and gait and could help prevent fall injuries. Moreover, it is a great way to get some cardiovascular exercise, improve your balance and coordination, and meet new friends who enjoy similar activities.
  4. Go Swimming
You don’t have to swim laps – simple water aerobics, aqua jogging, and just general swimming is a great way to get a low-impact exercise. It is also a great way to reduce back pain and improve body composition. Don’t know how to swim yet? Now’s the time to learn! Join a local swimming club where you can socialize with friends while learning how to swim.
